Every year like clockwork the Snow Geese arrive on the soccer field beside where I live and take over the neighborhood.
Richmond, BC is a vital sanctuary for these birds. Every year, millions of snow geese arrive in Richmond to rest or continue their journey further south to California. Snow Geese come from Siberia where they breed in the summer months. They travel down along BC’s marine coastal regions to Richmond, BC over the winter, and in April/May will start to head back up towards Siberia.
During the fall and spring, migrations happen for many birds, along an important route known as the Pacific Flyway. This is to get to and from their breeding, refuelling, and wintering habitats. Snow geese use these stopovers, refuelling at areas like the Fraser River Delta before taking off again.
